Enigma Community Update: April 10, 2020

April 3 - 10

Hi everyone! I hope you are safe and healthy. This post is our 6th installment of Enigma’s weekly community updates. Our intention is to be as transparent and collaborative as possible, and we appreciate all your insights and perspectives. Below is a summary of what we have been doing since last Friday. Let us know if you have any questions or ideas for the next sprint. Our current sprint will end this Sunday, April 12.

Highlight: SafeTrace API Demo

Summary

Our dev team has been focused on initializing cosmwasm-sgx-vm, and we are running CosmWasm CI tests. @reuven, @assafmo and @toml were able to implement a wasmi runtime inside the enclave. Now, everything has to be glued together. Then, we will be able to compile a new Enigma blockchain node with Wasm in SGX and start working on encryption. We’re also adding gas metering injection to wasm binaries.

We had to fix our testnet because of a “wrong signature.” The testnet died because we had two validators with a combined 99 percent of the voting power, thus we didn’t get BFT guarantees and every slight inconsistency could halt the network. We decided to bury it, and we will consider setting up a new one with SGX soon.

Meanwhile, @Dan and @laura from Chain of Secrets are developing another testnet, named Kamut. Our plan is to collectively maintain various test networks, each with specific properties, like how Ethereum offers Rinkeby, Kovan, Goerli, etc. Here is a useful guide for anyone interested in joining the testnet as a validator or full node.

Our product team is working diligently on the SafeTrace API, and frontend. We are connecting with many different projects involving contact tracing, and we hope to aid them in achieving practical and sufficient privacy. Here are our answers to eight relevant questions from the Computational Privacy Group. As a result of great work by @victor, @ainsley, @can et al, we are collaborating with developers, epidemiologists, government officials, etc. We have completed our initial work to reach a minimum viable product, and going forward, progress will be tracked in this GitHub project board.

Also, our friends at Outlier Ventures have published the first article on our Collective blog! In the post, “Enigma: Data Sharing Without Liability,” @theo gives an outline of APEX: Analytics from Private Execution, a collaborative analytics product built on Enigma. We hope you read this post and learn how APEX can enable machine learning and model training on shared data:

Enigma Governance Working Group

Next meeting: 2020-04-17T18:00:00Z

All are welcome to share thoughts in our weekly calls. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, and Enigma’s core team is grateful for your contributions! Please let us know if you need help submitting a proposal using our on-chain governance module. Next week, the GWG may discuss the idea of a Secret Foundation, which intends to make it as easy as possible to participate in the Enigma network.

Please reply in this thread with any ideas or questions
